Protectors of the Constitution: The Storting Chambers

This is an exhibition about Norway's first Storting Chamber, which was located on the premises of the Christiania (Oslo) Cathedral School from autumn 1814 until 1854.

The exhibition will take you back to a young independent state of Norway. When the Storting gathered in the Cathedral School for the first time in the autumn 1814, it was for the vital task of saving the Constitution and securing Norway's independence within the Union with Sweden.

From the gallery you can view the old Storting Chamber, where the negotiations to determine Norway's fate took place. You can read about selected events and see objects related to the Storting's work. You can also learn about the history of the Cathedral School's building and the role of the Chamber in the development og Norwegian democracy from 1814 to 1854. 

The exhibition is made in collaboration with the Archives of the Storting and with support from The Fritt Ord Foundation, the Sat Sapienti Foundation, the UNI Foundation and Friends of Norsk Folkemuseum.
