The way we celebrate Christmas today is a blend of elements from the old farming society, the traditions of the urban middle class in the 19th century, and the consumer culture of the post-war era.
What changes did the Christianization of Christmas in the 11th century bring? How was Christmas celebrated in the pre-industrial farming society? Which “new” customs were introduced into Norwegian Christmas celebrations at the end of the 19th century? What shapes Christmas today?
This year’s Christmas exhibition puts the spotlight on the Christmas tree. We show one tree decorated with imported ornaments from the 1880s and 1890s, one with traditional Norwegian paper decorations, and one decorated with Polish paper ornaments.
