This page contains information about archival material that is not freely accessible, for any reason. This usually means that the material contains personal information, or donators having set their own rules for access. All restricted material require you to to formally request access, and sign both an ethical use agreement and a confidentiality declaration. This applies to any format (written material, images, sound recordings and video recordings).

What material is restricted?
Restrictions are indicated by a padlock icon on The Archive Portal.
Some often used restricted archives:
- Material from Norwegian Ethnological Research (NEG) younger than 60 years
- Most interviews in the Audiovisual collection (many require research access)
- Material gathered by research projects (requires research access)

How do I gain access?
To access restricted material, request access by using the form on the bottom of this page.
- We require a short description of how the material is to be used
- You are required to sign agreements about ethical use, and a confidentiality declaration
How do I gain access to sensitive material as a researcher?
Material that have been gathered by research projects, and material containing sensitive personal information, have the strictest terms of access.

- You have to be a researcher or student at an approved research organisation
- Students must supply a written endorsement from their supervisor
Where can I view the material?
Access to physical material is given at The Documentation Center. You have to book your visit separately.
Access to scanned material from NEG is given on the samla.no site. Being logged in is required. Read more about using Samla in the text box below.
Using Samla.no as a foreigner
Access to restricted material on samla.no requires you to be able to log in. Read about it here (translate language settings as needed).
Central points are repeated here:
- If you are affiliated with The University of Oslo (UiO) or The University of Bergen (UiB), use your FEIDE login.
- If you are affiliated with a different Norwegian educational institution, contact Samla to enable your FEIDE login on Samla.no
- If you have a valid electronic ID, log in using either of the logins available in ID-porten.
If none of these options are available to you, contact Samla for technical assistance.
