The origin of this painting of the Reformation King Christian III is probably an engraving from Regum Daniae Icones – a book from 1646 with 102 depictions of Danish regents. Series of standardized royal portraits based on these pictures were produced and copied in great numbers and hung in Danish churches, castles and manors. Some examples are also found in Norway. Christian III’s motto «His Will be Done» is written in Latin at the top.
