Portrait of Martin Luther

From Korgen, Nordland County.
Unknown artist. Probably 17th century.

This portrait depicts Martin Luther in his study, holding the Augsburg Confession, one of the most important documents of the Lutherans, in his hands The Bible can be seen down to the left, and one of Luther’s own texts lies on the table. The white swan is a Luther symbol going back to the early reformer Jan Hus (1369-1415). The portrait is probably based on an engraving by the Dutch artist François Stuerhelt from the middle of the 17th Century.
