Báiki – the northern Sámi word for place or home – is the first of several Sámi interventions that will follow over the coming years at the museum. Placed within the Sámi settlement in the open-air museum at Norsk Folkemuseum, the project is a collective architecture and art installation created by Eveliina Sarapää and Raisa Porsanger.

What does it mean to work with traditional Sámi elements in a contemporary way, and what does a Sámi place in the open-air museum look like today – and tomorrow?
A conversation between architect Eveliina Sarapää, artist Raisa Porsanger and curator/conservator Karoline Trollvik. The conversation will be in English and is facilitated by artistic director of Verdde, Maria Svonni, and is open to the public.
15:30: Inaugural toast for all present and mingle at Báiki.

In collaboration with AHO, Eveliina Sarapää will lead a practical workshop for students from 10:00–14:00, based on Sámi design principles. The workshop will be held in English. If you are interested in participating, please contact tiago.matos@norskfolkemuseum.no.
Klara Johnsgård Raisa Porsanger is a Northern Sámi visual artist from Lakselv and Karasjok, based in Oslo. Her work explores Sámi identity, culture and materiality, often using reindeer hide and duodji as starting points, and connects these traditions to contemporary art and Western art history. In recent years, Porsanger has explored the presence of Sámi artworks and objects in art collections and archives. At Norsk Folkemuseum, she has examined the collection of Sámi grene weavings and created a sculptural work in plexiglass inspired by the patterns and use of colour in traditional grene weavings.
Privat Eveliina Sarapää is a Northern Sámi architect specialising in the renovation and transformation of buildings, timber construction and Sámi architecture. She aims to initiate conversations in Finland about Sámi architecture and the decolonisation of architecture, based on Sámi epistemologies. In 2020, she founded the architecture firm Sarapää Oroza Hartiala Architects (SOHA), which explores how existing buildings can be preserved and reused rather than demolished. The firm works with the renovation and transformation of listed buildings, as well as the careful integration of new buildings into existing urban structures.
The event is part of the project Sámi Interventions in the Open-Air Museum, an ongoing collaboration between the Norsk Folkemuseum and the nomadic art organisation Verdde. Through collaborations with Sámi architects, duojárat and artists, the project explores ways of creating Sámi spaces and places. It provides insight into how the presentation of Sámi building traditions, architecture and cultural heritage can be developed at the Norsk Folkemuseum’s open-air museum in the years to come.
