About the event

The board game Sáhkku dates back to before the 1600s and is a strategy game in the larger tâb family, known from European and Arab history. The game nearly disappeared in the 1950s but is now experiencing a well-deserved revival.

Sáhkku is easy to learn but challenging to master—a combination that makes it fun for curious beginners as well as experienced players. Historian Mikkel Berg-Nordlie has for several years been a driving force among Sámi and Norwegian board game enthusiasts and will be the evening’s knowledgeable speaker and enthusiastic instructor.

While participants enjoy traditional Sámi food, Berg-Nordlie will introduce the game’s history, board, and pieces. After the talk and meal, the game boards will be ready for play. Experienced Sáhkku players will also be on hand to join games and assist as co-instructors.

  • The evening begins with a short lecture and introduction to the game.
  • Participants are welcome to bring their own set, but boards, pieces, and rulebooks will be provided. Staff will also be available to answer questions if anyone gets stuck.
  • Café Arkadia will be open, offering traditional dishes such as Guohpparmális / Rognbollesuppe and reindeer sauté (reinskav).
  • Special exhibition of objects: In connection with the course, Sámi board games from the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History’s collection will be on display in the museum’s visitor centre.
  • Price: Free. Space is limited, so please register via the link above.

Join us for an evening of gaming, food, music, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere! Bures boahtin!
