The Old Town

The Old Town contains buildings from Christiania (Oslo) and some of its suburbs, and Chrystiegården from Brevik and Barthegården from Kragerø.

Christiania

In 1624 the town of Oslo was completely destroyed by fire. King Christian IV decreed that the town should be moved west, closer to the protection of Akershus Fortress. This new town was called Christiania.

The Apartment Builing

The 19th Century Apartment Building from Wessels gate 15 in Oslo contains eight period interiors and three exhibitions

The Suburbs

The suburbs of Christiania were as old as the town itself, some even older than Christian IV’s new town.

Trade and Transportation

Brevik and Kragerø

The two towns, Brevik and Kragerø, on the coast of Telemark, were early centers for timber trade
