Thematically, the collection primarily covers homes and domestic environments, crafts, rural folk art, traditional handicrafts, religious life, costume and textiles, as well as primary industries such as agriculture and forestry. It includes everyday objects as well as finely crafted pieces associated with different social strata. The museum also holds a substantial Sámi collection.

The older parts of the collection focus mainly on the 18th and 19th centuries, but a significant number of objects from the contemporary period and recent past have also been collected.
