Storehouse from Søndre Berdal

This large, finely built storehouse, or loft, was built for the wealthy Halvor Jonsson Berdal.

It stood on posts held together with huge foundation beams. Broad slabs lay on top of the posts to keep rodents away. Like most more recent lofts from Telemark, it has a gallery in front of the lower floor, where the stair to the upper floor is placed.

In King Oscar II’s Collection, the storehouse was used to exhibit objects from the royal collection. Windows were added in the roof to provide light for the displays.
