Gas Station

Copy of Gas Station from Holmestrand, 1928.

Holmestrand is a coastal town in Vestfold. For many years it was troubled by the steadily increasing traffic along the main highway between Oslo and the southern coast.

The gas station was built in concrete neo-classicistic architectural style of the 1920s for selling gasoline to drivers on one of Norway’s most important highways. The building has been reconstructed at the museum according to the original plans, and is of the same type as most other stations from that period.

The pumps and other equipment are original ESSO material. A paint store in Holmestrand had the station built as an annex to the business, selling gasoline delivered by the Standard Oil Company (S.O. = ESSO) through their Norwegian subsidiary. The tiger emblem was used first in Norway in 1923 and then many years later (1964) in worldwide campaigns.
