Guesthouse from Akkerhaugen

Popularly called the Cappelen house, this building has red walls and black and white corner ashlars representing brick walls with stone detailing. The style was copied from that of townhouses in Skien and Porsgrunn, themselves modeled on European buildings.

This one-room building with outer porch has a richly decorated interior. The beds and cupboards carved in flat relief are original, as is the corner fireplace. The walls have been decorated by one of Telemark’s most famous «rosepainters», Olav Hansson. Each wall has its own design, each encircled by «roses»: the chained beast from Revelations, the Fall, Samson and the lion, and, finally, a more everyday scene showing a farmer and a timber surveyor.
